An Analytical Study of Natural Resource Conservation in the Light of the Prophetic Seerah: Qur’anic and Hadith-Based Principles for Sustainable Environmental Stewardship
Abstract
This article examines the concept of natural resources in the light of the Prophetic Seerah, with particular emphasis on the Qur’anic and Hadith-based principles governing their use, protection, and equitable distribution. The study presents natural resources as divine blessings and trusts entrusted to human beings, rather than as unrestricted possessions. It explains the Qur’anic concept of human vicegerency (khilafah), according to which people are responsible for managing the earth with justice, moderation, accountability, and care for future generations. The article discusses the importance of land, water, agricultural and mineral resources, vegetation, and animals, highlighting their role in sustaining human life and maintaining ecological balance. Special attention is given to water as the foundation of life and to Prophetic teachings that prohibit its wasteful use. The study also examines the Prophetic principle that essential resources such as water, pasture, and fire should serve the collective interest and should not be monopolized in ways that deprive others of their rights. Furthermore, the Qur’anic prohibition of israf (wastefulness), tabdhir (extravagance), and fasad fi al-ard (corruption on earth) is presented as a comprehensive ethical framework for environmental protection. The research emphasizes that conservation is not merely an environmental concern but also a religious, moral, and social responsibility. It identifies moderation, justice, stewardship, accountability, collective responsibility, and sustainable utilization as major principles derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Finally, the article explores their contemporary application in addressing water scarcity, deforestation, pollution, resource depletion, climate-related challenges, recycling, energy conservation, community-based conservation, and equitable resource policies. The study concludes that the Prophetic model provides an integrated framework for responsible environmental stewardship and sustainable development, linking spiritual accountability with practical measures for protecting natural resources and preserving ecological balance for present and future generations. It therefore offers a valuable Islamic perspective for contemporary environmental governance.
