A Study of Different Methodologies in Hashiyah Sindhi and Biographical Narratives of Hadith Transmitters

Abstract

This study explores the different methodological approaches adopted in Hashiyah Sindhi and the biographical treatment of Hadith transmitters (Tarājim al-Ruwāt). Hashiyah Sindhi, authored by Shaykh Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī al-Sindhī, is regarded as an important scholarly commentary on Sunan al-Nasāʾī. The work demonstrates a distinctive methodology in explaining Hadith texts, clarifying difficult expressions, discussing chains of transmission, and highlighting relevant juristic and linguistic aspects. Alongside textual commentary, the biographical evaluation of narrators constitutes an important dimension of Hadith scholarship, as the reliability and status of narrators directly influence the assessment of Hadith authenticity. This research comparatively examines the methodologies used in Hashiyah Sindhi for introducing and evaluating narrators, with particular attention to their names, lineage, scholarly status, teachers, students, reliability, and critical assessments by the scholars of al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl. The study also analyzes the extent to which al-Sindhī relies on earlier biographical and Hadith sources and how he presents differing scholarly opinions concerning narrators. Through an analytical and comparative methodology, the research seeks to identify the distinctive features, strengths, and limitations of these approaches. The study concludes that Hashiyah Sindhi reflects a balanced engagement with both Hadith commentary and narrator criticism, thereby providing valuable material for understanding the methodological development of Hadith scholarship and the principles employed in evaluating the transmitters of Prophetic traditions.
