A Concise Critical Review of Hali Studies in the Muslim World

Abstract

This research examines the literary, intellectual, and reformative contributions of Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali with particular emphasis on his poetry, prose, biography writing, and critical thought. It explores Hali's role in the socio-cultural awakening of Indian Muslims during the nineteenth century under the influence of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh Movement. The study highlights Hali's masterpiece Musaddas-e-Madd-o-Jazr-e-Islam as a landmark reformist poem that inspired moral, educational, and social consciousness among Muslims. It also analyzes his major prose works, including Hayat-e-Saadi, Yadgar-e-Ghalib, and Hayat-e-Javed, demonstrating his pioneering contribution to Urdu biography, literary criticism, and historical writing. Furthermore, the paper discusses Hali's simple yet effective literary style, his commitment to realism, and his efforts to promote educational, ethical, and national reform through literature. The study concludes that Hali occupies a central position in modern Urdu literature as a reformer, critic, biographer, and poet whose literary legacy continues to influence Urdu scholarship and intellectual discourse.
