The Art of Inshaiya (Essay) Writing In Urdu Literature (An Analytical Study)

Abstract

Etymologically, the term "Inshaiya" means "expression" or "utterance." It is considered a relatively new genre of prose literature, bearing some resemblance to the essay (maqala/muhawala), yet possessing its own distinct identity separate from it.In an Inshaiya, the writer presents glimpses of his personality quite freely in his writings.The essay is that delightful genre of prose literature in which the writer presents his personal impressions, emotions, and imagination in a lively, informal, and free manner. In it, style takes precedence over information or philosophy.Technically, an essay is defined as a piece of writing in which any significant or insignificant event, any idea, any sentiment, or any fleeting mood is presented in an enjoyable manner. Or, an essay is that form of writing in which the author conveys his personal experiences or impressions in an interesting, witty, and unique style, and expresses the matters of the heart with .At first glance, it is a rather difficult task to define the limits of an essay, because not only have there been several revolutionary changes in the meaning and form of the essay from a historical perspective, but every essay also possesses a distinct quality both in terms of content and technique.Historically, there is such a marked divergence between the methods of Bacon, Lamb, and Chesterton that one feels considerable hesitation in including the essays written by them under the same category.
